1994+ Broadcasts

I have been recording, off and on, STN broadcasts since The Riddle of the Sands in early 1994. Whilst my collection is probably very sketchy compared to some others, I notice from the Broadcast List that I do appear to have several that appear missing.

Is there a correct procedure for making these known, or requesting "loans", access, however you want to phrase it, of other peoples recordings? Or is that bad ettiquette?

For myself, I would be rather happier (given the BBC's habit of losing things) if there were more copies in the world, and am more than willing to do a little backing-up if need be.

Also, I have one or two holes in my collection which I would like to have filled in, particularly from the 1994-1999 period, which is that most heavily covered by my own tapes.

Can anyone help or advise?

The current list as featured on the “Broadcasts” page is by no means a definitive list.

There are many more recordings both within the BBC archive and private collections than those that currently appear.

As you may already know BBC7 broadcast old SNT recordings most weekends. If we come across a recording that the BBC does not have, then if the person who has it has no objection, we would offer a copy to the BBC.

One of the big problems with the BBC’s search for missing material is that in recent years they have had lots of material returned, which now sits in the archive and is unlikely to be broadcast either because of “rights issues” or more annoyingly the BBC just doesn’t want to broadcast it!!!

Having said this I have recently returned some material which will be broadcast soon on BBC7, so this makes the effort worthwhile.

I should point out that this website does not encourage or support people swapping material where the copyright is owned by the BBC.

Any postings where people are directly soliciting such material would have to be deleted.

Having said that, it would be equally ridiculous not to recognise that the BBC owes a great debt to people who have recorded this material for their own personal use.

There are groups who work together to preserve these recordings. I would hope to be able to include details of these groups very soon.
